We are a faculty-student research team at the University of Washington working on a project that examines the current work practices of emergency management professionals and digital volunteers in regards to monitoring social media streams. Our goal is to design solutions to support this work in the future.

We would like to invite you to participate in our research study. We plan to complete “user interviews” with a small number of emergency professionals and digital volunteers, where we observe you doing the work of media monitoring using the tools and systems that you currently use to do this work.

These interviews will be either in-person at a convenient location for you (for those of you residing in the Pacific Northwest) or virtual (using Skype audio and screen casting).

Using the findings of these interviews, we hope to design tools to support this media-monitoring activity. Because our design process is an iterative one, after this study, you may be asked to participate in a second round of user studies where we observe you working with prototypes of the tools we are designing. However, there is no obligation to participate in the second research phase after completing the first.

If you are interesting in participating as a “user” in this research study or would like more information, please contact Assistant Professor Kate Starbird at kstarbi at uw.edu or DM @katestarbird on Twitter.

UPDATE: We're especially hoping to find individuals living in the Pacific Northwest whom we might be able to interview in person. If you're at all interested and you're nearby, please contact us and we'll tell you more about the study!
