This e-mail came from the Washington Geographic Information Council (WAGIC) list serve. This is a very serious issue for those of us east of the Cascades that use GPS. Please pass this onto other interested parties.

This is an important message about a segment our National CORS network, which includes one existing differential CORS in Spokane and a proposed differential CORS in Wenatchee. One other NDGPS station, GWEN, will be maintained by the USCG in the future. This does not affect any other CORS in Washington, yet the elimination of the Spokane CORS will have an effect upon differential coverage in Eastern Washington. Please read the following message from the WsDOT Geodetic Survey Manager, Kurt Iverson.

From: Iverson, Kurt [mailto:IversoK@wsdot.wa.gov] Federal Highways Turner Fairbanks Research Centers' Rudy Persaud has asked me to urge GPS users of all types in Washington State to respond to the Federal Register (see attachments) in support of keeping National Differential GPS (NDGPS) service operational. Previously, I prepared a letter signed by John Conrad for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (ASSHTO) on behalf of WSDOT. That letter was sent on to USDOT. Now, Rudy is requesting we respond in volume to a "Request for public comment" to the Federal Register by October 1st. You will read in the email and notice, that USDOT will develop a decommissioning plan for all inland NDGPS base/radio stations if transportation requirements no longer have a need for NDGPS or if no other funding sources are found. In addition, Rudy has included a link to a GPS World newsletter interview with Charlie Trimble, Chairman of GPS Industries Council (click on "pending decision..." in green) http://sidt.gpsworld.com/gpssidt/articl ... 0854#NDGPS This informative article gives a real world perspective on the necessity of the NDGPS infrastructure at this time. Please review these items and consider responding to the Federal Register, whether public employee or in private.

In the meantime, I will investigate how WSDOT responds to these types of individual requests and get back with you. Thank You for your attention and anticipated support of the NDGPS network.

All:

You are receiving this e-mail because you have indicated an interest in the Nationwide Differential GPS (NDGPS) program, or because someone indicated that you or your organization may be interested in NDGPS.

The Department of Transportation?s (DOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) on August 1 published a notice in the Federal Register assessing the current user requirements for the inland (terrestrial) component of the Nationwide Differential GPS (NDGPS) system. This assessment is in preparation for making a recommendation to the National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Executive Committee on the need to continue to operate inland NDGPS, and to make a decision on funding the NDGPS. If no transportation requirements or other federal user requirements are identified as a result of the needs assessment, and if there are no other Federal or other funding sources willing to sponsor or partner in sponsoring NDGPS, DOT will develop a decommissioning plan for NDGPS.

To keep on track for a decision by the National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Executive Committee, comments are due by October 1, 2007. Please distribute to all in the community whom you believe would have an interest, so we can get the most complete assessment possible.

A copy of the Notice is attached.
